Inventory Muda

Parts, raw materials, work-in-progress, inventory, supplies and finished goods are all forms of inventory.  Inventory is considered a muda since it does not add value to the product.  Inventory will:

Require space in the shop

Require transportation

Require forklifts

Require conveyor systems

Require additional labor

Require interest on materials

In addition, inventory sitting around in various stages can be affected in these ways:

Gathering dust

Deterioration

Becoming obsolete

Getting wet

Handling damage
